MARC JACOBS BEAUTY X BEAUTY IS BORING… VOLUMIZING GLOW:
Here is another image from our recent tutorial video collaboration with Marc Jacobs Beauty. This look features the Volumizing Glow using the new Marc Jacobs Beauty Air Blush in Kink and Kisses. It’s a simple draping technique that adds youthful volume and a pretty flush to the face. If you haven’t already seen the tutorial videos, please click here to view them.
Note: “Draping” is a term for contouring and adding dimension to the face using blush. It was inspired by the godfather of modern makeup, Way Bandy.
HOW TO CREATE THE VOLUMIZING GLOW:
1. Start by blending the two shades of the Kink and Kisses Air Blush palette together using an angled blush brush.
2. Then apply the Air Blush to the apples of your cheeks, blending upward and back toward your hairline. If you want a more dramatic look, after you have finished blending, tap a tiny bit more color right in the center of the apples.
Tip: If you are unsure about where the apples of your cheeks are, look into a mirror and smile! The rounded parts of your cheeks that become more pronounced when you smile are the “apples”.

The above image of Samie was shot directly after the first tutorial video and features the Lifting Glow technique, a type of draping using the new Marc Jacobs Beauty Air Blush.

HOW TO CREATE THE LIFTING GLOW:
1. Start by blending the two shades of the Lines and Last Night Air Blush palette together using an angled blush brush.
2. Then, staying high on the cheekbone, sweep the blush upward toward the hairline. The Lifting Glow technique was designed to give a “lifted” look so you want to concentrate the most intense color on the high points of the face.
3. With the same mixture of the two blush shades, apply lightly along your jawline and down the sides of your neck. Keep the color focused right under your jaw and beneath your ears, fading down the sides of your neck.
4. For a more editorial look, start at the base of your upper lashline and blend the blush up to the temple.
Tip: Use the Marc Jacobs Beauty Glowstick Spotlight on the highest points of the face to add extra dimension and lift!

STUDIO VISIT… CARLY CARDELLINO
This is what happens when Carly Cardellino, the Senior Beauty Editor for Cosmopolitan.com, stops by the Beauty Is Boring studio for a casual visit… It began with an hour of non-stop beauty talk which turned into swatching new products and then somehow evolved into a full on photo shoot. It’s Carly’s fault for being so damn photogenic and for reminding me of 60’s actress Sharon Tate. I always admired Sharon Tate’s signature nude lips and exaggerated lashes so this was the perfect opportunity to do an updated version.
Note: Whenever Carly and I get together, it turns into a beauty adventure. On her previous visit, we went on a research (i.e. shopping) tour of Japanese beauty supplies in LA’s Little Tokyo district.
Another Note: In a twist of irony, I was completely out of my usual Japanese bottom lash strips for this shoot with Carly… the same bottom lash strips that I bought in bulk on our Little Tokyo shopping trip. Luckily I was able to simply reverse and trim a pair of the great Georgie La Cherie Faux Lashes to create the look.

URBAN DECAY X BEAUTY IS BORING, LOOK #3
I love a quick “day to night” transformation so for our third Urban Decay look, I simply built on the electric blue liner from look #2. I added the same Razor Sharp Longwear Liquid Eyeliner in Chaos to Rocio’s bottom lashline to create an intensely blue base. Then I blended the bright blue sparkling eyeshadow called Vega from the new Moondust Eyeshadow Palette over the entire eye, stopping just short of the crease. I also added extra highlight to the skin and switched the lip from a more matte finish to a sheen. The extra highlight and shine on the lip work better with the sparkling eye plus they catch the light which is always gorgeous at night.

URBAN DECAY X BEAUTY IS BORING, LOOK #2
Shake up your beauty routine by swapping out your everyday black liquid liner for Urban Decay’s new Razor Sharp Long Wear Liquid Eyeliner in Chaos, a brilliant shade of electric blue. It’s the perfect twist on the classic cat eye and nude lip look. The formula has serious staying power and a unique glossy, almost vinyl finish. This was also my first time using the All Nighter Liquid Foundation, part of Urban Decay’s upcoming Fall collection. It’s a full coverage, oil absorbing formula with a matte finish. The coverage was so complete, I skipped the concealer.

URBAN DECAY X BEAUTY IS BORING, LOOK #1
I love experimenting with new products so I was excited when Urban Decay gave us the opportunity to create a look with products from their Fall 2016 collection (launching in just a few days) as well as the new Moondust Palette and the entire Vice Lipstick collection. So many colors! So many innovative textures! It was a bit too challenging to settle on a single look so instead, I created three.
Look #1 is a play on the iconic Robert Palmer “Addicted to Love” music video. Smokey eyes, strong brows and intense red lips. To give the look a more modern feel, I used the shade Granite (a silvery charcoal) in Urban Decay’s new Moondust Eyeshadow Palette as a base. I swept it over the eyelids and blended to just past the crease. I also applied it along the bottom lashline, fading the intensity of the color from the outer corner to the center. Then I used theRazor Sharp Long Wear Liquid Eyeliner in Cuff (a high sheen silver from the Fall collection) on the inner corners and blended it outward. To create more dimension, I traced lightly along the outer corners of the upper and lower lashlines with the 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero. And for the finishing touch, I applied a coat of Subversion Lash Primer followed by two coats ofPerversion Mascara.

COLOR THEORY… MIRIAM HANEY
With all the heavy makeup trending right now, it’s refreshing to skip foundation and focus on a singular pop of unexpected color. I chose an intense primary yellow, in part because yellow can be a challenging makeup shade to work with (did you know the human eye processes yellow first?) but mainly because it contrasts perfectly with Miriam’s bright blue eyes. Summer is a great time to break with traditional makeup styles and experiment with vivid color. Keeping your skin natural and your lips neutral provides an ideal canvas for more painterly color applications like this dash of yellow.
Note: I first shot Miriam when she was a new face (which is industry slang for a model who has just started her career) but these days she is busy doing major editorials, campaigns and even walking the runway for Louis Vuitton sporting amazing face paint by Pat McGrath.

MIDSUMMER NIGHTS… RAVEN LYN

Glossy skin, a simple wash of deep bronze around the eyes, a touch of bronzer to emphasize the cheekbones and a warm nude lip makes for the perfect accoutrement to July’s hot summer nights. To create this look, I used long lasting cream formulas applied with my fingers. Cream colors are gorgeous over summer skin since they have minimal texture and the new generation of long lasting formulas mean they stay put even in humidity. In fact, Sisley’s Phyto-Eye Twistsoutlast most powder shadows (even over a primer!) in the heat. I am also a fan of these kind of products since you can just toss them in your clutch or crossbody for easy touchups without brushes.
Note: Even though it’s a very modern look (with a smidge of disco), there is something quite romantic about it that calls to mind Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

LAVENDER LIPS… AVERY THARP
When the weather gets so hot that your eye makeup starts melting (looking at you LA), reach for a statement lip color like this lavender shade from Tarte. Pair it with dewy skin, nude eyes and messy brows for a grunge vibe. I know that last item is going to upset the many people who are deeply attached to their perfectly drawn brows. And while I do appreciate the well groomed look, there is something really cool, a certain je na sais quoi, about leaving your brows wild.

ORGANIC MAKEUP, LOOK #1… BRAINA
Recently I’ve had so many inquiries about organic makeup that I thought it would be fun to do a series of looks with it. This first look features RMS Beauty (along with one of my personal skincare favorites, Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil) on the always inspiring Braina Laviena.
